CABLE ONE CHROMEBOOK DONATION HELPS IMPROVE ACADEMIC SKILLS AT HAWTHORNE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

September 17, 2015 – Idaho Falls,ID — Hawthorne Elementary School will be equipped with new Chromebooks this fall as the result of a Cable ONE initiative designed to improve student access to technology in schools. Cable ONE will present the Chromebooks in a special ceremony at the school on Tuesday, September 22 at 2:30 p.m.

Now in its second year, the Cable ONE Cares program provides Chromebooks to Title I schools in the markets it serves.

Cable ONE Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Steve Fox said that access to technology in schools is no longer a luxury, but a necessity, and that donating Chromebooks to Title I schools will help bridge the digital divide in schools that lack funding.

“While many school systems are taking big steps and working to give every student and every teacher access to the technology and tools they need to learn, not all schools have access to funding to support this effort,” Fox said. “Because we believe so strongly in improving education through the use of technology, we want to do our part to support the communities where we live and work.”

Hawthorne Elementary School Principal Randy Stocking said the school plans to use the Chromebooks at all grade levels to improve the students’ math, reading and language arts skills.

“This technology will allow students to greatly improve their keyboarding and communication skills as they prepare for high-stakes testing and college and career readiness,” Stocking said.

Stocking said that the Chromebooks will also assist with fact fluency, reading fluency and comprehension.

“In this day and age, almost every job or career utilizes computer skills - whether it be writing reports or doing research,” Stocking said. “Many of our students do not have access to this technology that is important for skill development. Putting Chromebooks into their hands at this age enables our students to acquire the experience needed to be academically successful at all levels of education.”

Cable ONE General Manager Maury Lee said that Cable ONE is committed to strengthening and improving the communities it serves, not only through its products and services, but through support of the local community.

“Our Cable ONE associates are passionate about giving back to the community where they live and work,” Lee said. “We know that improving access to technology in our schools will improve education and benefit our community for the long term.”
