Grenada Elementary School will be equipped with new Chromebooks this fall as the result of a
Cable ONE initiative designed to improve student access to technology in schools. Cable ONE will present the Chromebooks in a special ceremony at the school on Monday, September 21 at 9 a.m.
Now in its second year, the Cable ONE Cares program provides Chromebooks to Title I schools in the markets it serves.
Cable ONE Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Steve Fox said that access to technology in schools is no longer a luxury, but a necessity, and that donating Chromebooks to Title I schools will help bridge the digital divide in schools that lack funding.
“While many school systems are taking big steps and working to give every student and every teacher access to the technology and tools they need to learn, not all schools have access to funding to support this effort,” Fox said. “Because we believe so strongly in improving education through the use of technology, we want to do our part to support the communities where we live and work.”
Grenada Elementary School Principal Dr. Vivian Simmons said the school will use the Chromebooks as a mobile lab to provide enrichment, remediation, and assessment for students in grades Pre-k through third grade.
“The addition of these Chromebooks will greatly increase the number of students who have access to the digital portion of our curriculum,” Simmons said. “This donation will also allow students a more user-friendly method of technology, allowing them to better demonstrate their knowledge.”
Simmons said that the Chromebooks will expose students to new technology which will help prepare them for school and for their future.
“It is important to provide children access to ever-changing technology. The earlier students have access to current technology, the better prepared they are to compete in the global marketplace,” Simmons said.
Cable ONE General Manager Deron Lindsay said that Cable ONE is committed to strengthening and improving the communities it serves, not only through its products and services, but through support of the local community.
“Our Cable ONE associates are passionate about giving back to the community where they live and work,” Lindsay said. “We know that improving access to technology in our schools will improve education and benefit our community for the long term.”
